A luxury car that gets over 25mpg is otherwise unheard of until well into the 21st century. These engines are extremely fuel-efficient, helping draw attention to the W123 in this modern age of greater concern over the cost of a petroleum-based transportation system. The W123 featured every one of the OM61x diesel engine series with cast iron heads: the 4-cylinder OM615 and OM616, and the 5-cylinder OM617 in both turbo and naturally aspirated versions. Part of the continued popularity of the W123 is the longevity created by it's over-engineering, and a big part of that is the longevity of the diesel engines in particular. The climate control system was also completely redone at that time. A number of changes were made over the years, the most notable in 1980 when the interior upholstery patterning was changed throughout the entire vehicle. Part of the popularity of the W123 was that it was released in such a wide variety of models and options-different engines, paint colors and upholstery. Later in 1976 coupe and long-wheelbase sedan models were produced, and in 1978 the first of the famous W123 wagon models was sold. Much of the styling was based on W116 design aspects, adapted to the more modestly-priced E-series W123. The W123 sedan was released in 1976 and acclaimed for its modern appearance, with most of the chassis similar to it's predecessor the W114/W115.
The W123 is one of the most popular Mercedes-Benz chassis ever built, with production of the 240D model reaching nearly half a million. While that is turning out to be a fad that has slowly faded, the W123 Mercedes is now starting to take it's rightful place as a valuable classic car worthy of restoration, proved by its numerous appearances in movies and television in recent years. They are possibly the most popular of the classic Mercedes-Benz models, in part due to the popularity of biodiesel and vegetable oil-based fuels used in the diesel models.
